So, you have either recently installed a hot water heater or noticed water pressure issues. Could the water heater be the cause? It’s entirely possible. Of course, there are numerous plumbing concerns that may lead to noticeable water pressure issues in your home. We will explore a few of these concerns, including a bad water heater. Knowing the cause of your water pressure issues can save you money, time, and the headache of having to replace the system.

Signs of a Bad Water Heater

Whether you’ve recently installed a brand new water heater or are dealing with the same old system from last year, there are common signs to watch for. The following symptoms usually indicate an issue that may lead to low water pressure. Ideally, your hot water will flow at the same water pressure as your cold water. Here are a few signs of why that may not be the case:

  • Humming – With a brand-new water heater, a heat trap is typically installed to bolster energy efficiency. You may notice a slight humming sound from the system. This sound is the water flow being restricted to cut down on energy use. You’ll need to shut off the tank, close the water valves, unscrew the heat trap, and replace it with dielectric nipples.
  • Blockages – One of the leading causes of low water pressure from a hot water heater is due to blockages. Such blockages stem from debris lodged in the pipes. This debris is often mineral accumulation from hard water. You may need to drain the system and clean the tank.
  • Crossover – A less commonly discussed reason for low water pressure is crossover. Occasionally, cold water will enter the hot water pipes. While this situation does not directly lower the overall water pressure, it does lead to less hot water available for your home. It may seem like low water pressure at times.

Further Considerations

The aforementioned situations are quite common in modern households. However, there are other considerations to take into account when determining pressure loss from a water heater. For example, the water heater valves may not have been opened completely during installation. Or, the pressure entering your home may be low due to a defective pressure regulator. Check for this issue by opening an outdoor water spigot. If the pressure is low outdoors, then the issue likely lies with the city water.

If you’re uncomfortable with performing such tasks or maintenance, contact an experienced plumbing technician. You should not risk your plumbing system or hot water heater unless you are comfortable working with the system.
