Water Leaks in Lake Charles & BeaumontSpring is here, and home maintenance may be one of the things at the top of your list to take care of before summer vacations start getting planned. Let’s talk about water leaks in your plumbing.

Check for Pipe Leaks

Even though southwest Louisiana may not have experienced the bitter cold that most of the country endured, it’s still a good idea to make an inspection of your plumbing pipes. Arm yourself with a flashlight and take a look under the sinks. Leaks can start out small. Spraying water from your kitchen is funny on television, but not so much in real life.

A silent cause of wasted water frequently comes from our toilets. Homeowners can waste 30-250 gallons a day, depending on the amount of water being leaked. That’s a huge added cost on our water bill and an unnecessary drain on our pocketbook.

Toilet Leak Test

This test can be easily marked off our “to do” list with very little work. Place 1 teaspoon of food coloring into the tank. Guard the bathroom and make sure nobody interrupts your task by flushing. Wait about 10-15 minutes. Look inside your toilet bowl. If the water is clear, then you are not leaking any water. Yay! But if the water changed color, you have water leaking from the tank. Check Outside

Spring is a good time to take a special look a the outside of our houses and around the yard. Plumbing issues may be not be as common in our warm climate, but leaks can happen anywhere at anytime. Run the outside faucets and then check for leaks. Walk around the yard and see if any drainage issues have appeared that weren’t there before.
