The first step to knowing if you have a slab leak, is making sure you understand what a slab leak is. If you are not sure, please check out our recent blog post “What is a Slab Leak?”

If you think you might have a slab leak, then you have probably noticed something unusual happening in your home. A smell? A wet spot? A change in water bill? Here are a few specific things to look for.

Water Bill

You may have noticed a jump in your water bill and are probably questioning your family to try to determine where all that water went to. On one hand you’re hoping that something changed in their habits that you weren’t aware of. On the other hand you are dreading the realization that water may be leaking somewhere unseen.

Mold or Mildew

The sudden dampness in your home can be creating more than a smell that you can’t seem to get rid of. It may be causing mold and mildew to grow in your carpet and inside your walls.

Floors

A leak under your foundation means that moisture is rising up through your home. This could be making your carpet damp in places or showing signs of warping in your hard floors.

Hot Water

A slab leak is very often caused by the hot water lines. This means that your shower is going to run out of hot water faster, your energy bills are going to rise, and your hot water heater is going to be taking on extra work to keep up.

Slab Leak Test

The most obvious way to find out if you might have a slab leak, is to determine if you are losing water somewhere in your home.

  1. Turn off all the appliances that use water in your home. The goal is to be sure that there is no water usage during the test.
  2. Locate your water meter. It is probably in the ground somewhere near your garage, driveway, or curb. It is connected to your main water shut-off. Take off the lid and write down the numbers shown on the meter.
  3. Wait at least 30 minutes and then check the numbers on the gauge. Hopefully they are the same and you have no water leak! If they are not the same, now is the time to seek professional assistance.
