Whether you’ve dropped your engagement ring down the sink or you’ve got a clog that your plunger just can’t get force through, checking your sink trap could be your next move.

What is a sink trap?

If you take a look under your sink, you will probably notice that instead of a straight pipe you will see a “U”. There is a good reason for that! That “U” shape serves 2 very good purposes.

1. Our plumbing empties out into the sewer system. Nobody wants to smell what comes up from the sewer! Water settles in the “U” shape of the pipe and forms a natural barrier to keep us from experiencing the horror of sewer smell.

2. The sink trap will not always save us from losing important items down the drain, but sometimes it does! Whether it is a valuable ring or just debris that is forming a clog, sometimes checking the sink trap is an easy answer.

How to check the sink trap

First off, remember that you’re going to be working under the sink. You are going to want to dress comfortably and be prepared for any accidental water.

Remember, you are hoping that whatever is causing that clog is going to spill out when you remove the sink trap.

Next, remove everything under the sink that will be in your way and place a bucket under the sink trap. That will help you catch the water and debris that could spill out and lessen clean up.

Now loosen the sink trap. We’re hoping that with the help of a brush you will be able to reach whatever is causing your clog.

Once you’ve done all you can, reattach the sink trap and run the water. Check under the sink and make sure there are no leaks. You don’t want to create any more problems.

How’d you do? Congratulations if you were successful! If you still have a clog you may want to consider getting professional service at this point.
