Garbage Disposal ProblemIs your garbage disposal being difficult? Either not doing its job correctly, or just not working at all? Here’s a link to a few tips to try to get your garbage disposal running again. If a new garbage disposal is in your future, here’s some suggestions on what to look for when choosing a new model.

If you think all garbage disposals are the same, think again. Just like any power tool, the effectiveness of a garbage disposal starts with its horsepower. While inexpensive units can often be bought at the local home improvement store, we never recommend 1/3 hp. The smallest size you should ever consider is ½ hp. We can discuss the difference horsepower can make in your kitchen with you.

Noise Level
The main function of a garbage disposal has never been about being quiet. The sound of churning and chomping has always been evidence of it doing its job. If you are trying to reduce that sound we recommend buying a larger, heavier model that will absorb more of the noise. Just make sure the extra size will still fit under the sink.

Garbage disposals have never been considered the best friend of our septic systems. With today’s advancements though, even a homeowner with a septic system can enjoy the luxury of a garbage disposal in your home. Be sure to discuss the options with your friendly neighborhood plumber.

There are 2 types of switches that control the power to the garbage disposal. The most common is the continuous-feed. Turn on the water, flip the switch and listen to your food waste be ground up and moved down the drain. The second option is a batch-feed. This type automatically turns on when you place a specific stopper in the drain. It is considered safer because the mighty power of your garbage disposal won’t run unless the stopper is placed correctly.
