How to Clear a Clogged Shower Drain

Your shower drain is clogged, and you fear that a giant hairball is stuck in the pipes keeping water from flowing. If you want to investigate before calling in reinforcements, here’s a few tips to try.

You’ve probably tried hot water and a plunger in the past in the kitchen. It’s worth a try in the shower. It will probably have less favorable results, but you should always exhaust the easiest possibilities first.

Here’s a recipe for a natural drain cleaner that may help and won’t hurt your pipes. Remove any standing water left in the shower, pour 1 cup of baking soda and then 1 cup of vinegar. That combination should produce a bit of bubbling. Once that is done, pour hot water into the drain and see if it has increased water flow at all. We suggest trying this a couple of times before abandoning it.

Commercial drain cleaners are available, but should be used sparingly. Repeated uses may damage your plumbing system and constant clogged drain issues could be a sign of more serious issues that should not be ignored. Always read the instructions thoroughly before using.

The next step would be to actually inspect the drain and that will require removing the shower drain cover. Click here for tips on that.

If you can’t get to the blockage by hand, you’ll need to consider purchasing a plumber’s snake (drain auger) if you don’t already have one. This will enable you to reach into the drain and hopefully pull out the clog, or at least enough of it so that water can resume to flow and the drain will slowly clear itself.
