Fix a Broken Toilet HandleA loose door knob or a shaky shed handle we tend to put on our “to do” list for another day … but a broken toilet handle cannot be ignored! If you are ready to become a hero in your home by making the fast fix to the problem, here’s what to do.

Take the lid off the back of the tank and survey the situation. Lift the chain. If the toilet flushes properly, then it’s time to go to the local home improvement store. If you have very few tools in your home, be sure to check that you have a wrench or pliers that will fit the job before leaving. Replace the lid to keep it safe, and note if the handle connects on the front or side of the tank.

Once you return home and you are ready to begin, let the rest of the family know that it is last call for bathroom usage until you have installed the new toilet handle. You are not going to want to be interrupted.

Take the lid off the back of the tank and place somewhere safe and out of the way. Turn the water off. Flush the toilet with the chain so that you have a dry place to work in.

Loosen the mounting nut on the handle. It will most likely have a reverse thread, so turn clockwise. Remove the handle. Replace with the new handle and reattach the chain.

Turn the water back on and flush. If it is a job well done, replace the lid onto the back of the toilet and let everyone know the bathroom is back open for business.
