Garbage Disposal ProblemsThe garbage disposal is that crunching monster that lives under our sink and chews through the kitchen waste that goes down the drain. But what happens if that monster is quiet or can’t seem to chew through its dinner? Well, then you have a problem.

How Do I Fix My Garbage Disposal?

First, get prepared to make some room under the sink so that you can get to your garbage disposal unit. Most of us use all the space in the kitchen, and you are going to want to have some room to work with.

Next, turn on the garbage disposal and listen. It’s going to tell you a lot. Is it quiet? Does it hum? Is it unsuccessfully chewing?

If it is quiet, then hopefully it just needs to be reset. Near the bottom of the disposal should be a red button, press it. If that doesn’t work, unplug the disposal and test the outlet with something else to make sure it is getting power.

If it is humming, you probably have something jammed in that is keeping the blades from doing its job. Before you continue, TURN OFF THE POWER to the disposal. Garbage disposal accidents are no laughing matter.

At the bottom of the disposal you probably have a hex-shaped hole that will allow you to fit a hex wrench. This may give you a vantage point to free the blades from the clog. If that isn’t an option, try using something like a shortened broom stick into the sink drain to see if you can wiggle the blades into movement.

If it chewing (but not swallowing), the wrong things could have been put into the sink and are keeping your garbage disposal from doing its job. Fibrous food waste, such as banana peels, can keep the blades from being able to completely chew through the waste and not allowing the sink to drain properly. Make sure the POWER IS OFF and then use tongs and work on pulling out as much of the material as possible.

We hope this has helped solve your garbage disposal problem, but if you still have kitchen problems we can help. Roto-Rooter continues to be the #1 name in plumbing. Check out our money saving coupons and then give us a call.
