Running ToiletThere are certain things we take for granted on a frequent basis. One of them is that when we push down on the handle of our toilet, all the “poo” washes away. But if your toilet has been running water unsuccessfully in an effort to fill the tank, that may not happen. And that’s not something any of us want to see.

How Does My Toilet Work?

The magic can happen because the tank of your toilet is always filled with water. It waits for you to push on the handle to give you a fresh toilet bowl of water.

When you push on the handle a flapper opens up the hole that lets the water fall into the bowl from the tank. As the tanks empties, the flapper drops and closes the opening back up.

Inside the tank is a plastic float. As the water drains into the bowl, it tells the valve to fill up the tank with water. When the float levels off, the valve knows the tank is full and to stop filling it with water.

What are Tips to Fix My Running Toilet?

Some of you have never had the opportunity to see the inside of a toilet tank. Now is your chance! Beware though, you’re going to be getting your hands wet.

The lid of your tank should easily lift off. Place it aside where it won’t get knocked off and accidentally broken. Do you see the flapper? Remember its job is to open and close the hole connecting the tank to the bowl. See if it looks like it is opening and closing correctly.

Now, is the tank refilling with water? Pull up on the float slightly and see if the water stops running. You may only need a minor adjustment to the float to keep it from running.

If you think you might have the issue solved, don’t put the lid back on quite yet. Try flushing the toilet again and see if it is doing its job correctly.
