All of us at one time or another, started a project in our home thinking it would be simple. Unfortunately it often doesn’t work out that way. Plumbing projects can especially be like that.

If you decided to replace an old sink or faucet, you may have found that the current copper pipe isn’t going to fit properly for one reason or another. At this point you have 3 choices. 1. Call Roto Rooter to have the job finished professionally; 2. Learn how to join PVC and Copper Pipe together; 3. Learn to live with the unsightly look of that old sink or faucet.

Item list

PVC or CVPC Pipe

Compression Connector

Pipe cutting tool such as a hacksaw

Tongue and Groove Pliers

Pipe Primer for PVC or CVPC

All purpose pipe glue

Remember … once you begin to cut the existing copper pipe, there is no going back. Be sure you are confident in your handyperson skills and have the time to finish the project.

Ready to begin? If you’ve never worked with PVC pipe before, check out our blog post “How to join PVC pipe” for some extra information.  Now assemble your tools, turn off the water and let’s go! Carefully measure and double check where you want to cut the pipe. Smooth off the edges of your new pipe cuts with the file.

Brush primer inside the plastic pipe and the plastic end of the compression connector. Then apply the pipe glue. Connect the 2 pieces together, twist and hold at least 30 seconds to allow the 2 pieces to bond together.

Next remove the compression nut and ring from the copper side of the connector and screw both onto the newly cut copper pipe.  Once the end of the copper pipe is completely inserted into the connector, tighten with pliers. The compression ring will form a watertight seal on its own without the use of pipe thread tape.

Once you have completed the project you were working on, turn the water back on and check for leaks.  We hope your patience with this project has given you the positive results you were hoping for.
