How to Remove a Shower Drain Cover

Each morning the water in your shower gets a little higher around your feet. You’ve put it off as long as you can. You’ve decided to see what is keeping your shower from draining properly.

Find a good time when you won’t be interrupted by family members, and get ready to get a little dirty. What is probably lingering in your drain is hair, soap scum, and hopefully no surprises.

Take a close look at how your shower drain cover is attached. Often it is held by 1 or 2 screws that a Phillips head screwdriver can easily take care of. If it gives you a fight, have a pair of needle nose pliers and WD-40 on hand to help the removal process along.

If your particular model is not a screwed in Grill Type, here’s a few of the other most common drain covers:

Push/Pull, grab the body and unscrew the top, then unscrew the insert beneath and lift out the stopper;

Lift/Turn, if there is no set screw to loosen, just screw off; pop-up covers, with a bit of wiggling these should pull up and off;

Toe Touch, this will take a close examination, either the cap will unscrew or the complete piece will unscrew.

Flip It, Turn while you pull it out.

Once the shower drain cover is removed, be prepared to see what’s been making your drains work so slowly. If it looks like a bit more than you bargained for, give us a call.
