Let’s face it. Rust stains in a toilet just look ugly. Regular cleaning doesn’t make them look any prettier. Before buying a new toilet, here’s a few tips and techniques to give your existing one a last hurrah.

Get your workspace ready

It goes without saying that cleaning your toilet is probably not your favorite job. At least make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes and the area around your toilet will offer you easy access. Turn off the water to the toilet and flush a couple times to empty out the bowl.

Go Green?

There are many green alternatives to the cleaning solutions you can buy in the store. These are just a few.

You probably have lemon juice or white vinegar already in your cabinet. Choose one and use it to scrub a patch of rust in your toilet. If you don’t see results, trying mixing the chosen liquid with baking soda to create a paste and apply to the rust stains. Wait about 30 minutes and then scrub scrub scrub.

You can also trying filling up your toilet bowl with Cola and letting it sit overnight. Try scrubbing those rust stains again and see if that drinking soda has been able to soften up those stains for you.

Last Chance

If a green cleaning solution is just not touching those rust stains, your local store will have many other options to choose from. Just beware and read the label thoroughly. If you have a septic system, pay special attention, some of them may be harmful to the useful bacteria it needs to work properly.
