We just discussed why water pipes burst in a recent blog post. Now we’d like to continue that topic by listing a few tips on how to make sure your plumbing pipes are ready for those surprise dips in temperature.

You may not think Southwest Louisiana home owners need to worry about preparing for freezing temperatures, but the weather has fallen into the 20s this winter. Don’t let one bitter cold evening surprise you with unexpected plumbing bills.

1. Locate the pipes in the coldest part of your house. Probably the easiest way to safeguard those exposed pipes is to add insulation. Your local home improvement store sells “sleeves” that can be wrapped around the pipes to give them that added protection against unexpected temperatures.

2. Heating tape is another option. There are different types, depending on the amount of money you want to spend. It should be installed carefully with a full understanding of the instructions. This option can be more costly, so be sure to research the choices to help you decide what will work best for you and your home.

3. Even southern states should consider disconnecting hoses from outdoor faucets when winter approaches. “Frostproof” faucets are still threatened by freezing temperatures if a hose is connected.

Natural Heating

Still worried? Open up the cabinets under your sink in the kitchen and bathrooms so that added heat can make its way to those pipes.

Thermostat. Yes, I hope we all turn the thermostat down at night to save on our heating bills (or have it set automatically). But if you are concerned about unusually cold temperatures, consider leaving the thermostat unchanged.
