Why do water pipes freeze?

Water Pipes FreezeYou are standing in line at the grocery store and you overhear an older couple talking about leaving their faucets dripping overnight. Why would anyone make a point of letting their faucets drip?

Recently Southwest Louisiana saw temperatures dip into the 20s, and yes, freeze warnings and hard freeze warnings were issued to give homeowners advance notice of the impending cold weather.

It is unusual for our area to sustain such cold temperatures, but there is no reason we can’t all take a few extra minutes to help ensure our plumbing pipes don’t freeze and burst.

Our plumbing system runs throughout the house in order to connect to the main water supply. That can mean the town’s water system or it could mean your own personal well. It doesn’t matter which one. If there is a chance any part of that plumbing system can start to freeze, be sure to take precautions.

Keeping the water flowing through your plumbing system, even one drip at a time, can help keep them from freezing, but sometimes that is not enough.

We learned in grade school that when water freezes it expands. If part of your plumbing freezes, and your faucet is not dripping, that pressure has no where to go. That’s when a pipe can burst.

Don’t ignore a frozen pipe! Call us to diagnose and remedy the problem before a pipe can burst. That is a much more costlier problem.
