Why does my bathroom smell like sulfur?

I’m sure you’ve seen the commercials on air fresheners that can be used to help with the temporary smells that are created in our bathrooms. The poo from #2 can leave behind odors that are best to get rid of as quickly as possible.

But what if you are now surprised by a rotten egg smell from your bathroom or kitchen drain? That is not something you should ignore. That smell is probably being caused by unwanted bacteria that is generating hydrogen sulfide gas.

Easy Tests

Sometimes it is difficult to the determine the exact location where the smell is coming from. Here’s a simple test that only takes a few minutes.

  1. Pour a glass of water from the sink you believe the rotten egg smell is coming from. Take it outside and smell it.
  2. Pour another glass of water from a different room. Also take it outside and smell it.

If the 2 glasses of water smell different, then you’ve pinpointed what is the probable drain location of the smell. If they smell the same, well now you know it is the water, not the drain.

Hopeful solutions

Smelly Drain — If you’ve determined that the smell is coming up through the drain, here’s something that may work. Pour a 1/2 cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar into the drain, That mixture should kill the bacteria that is creating the horrible smell. (A 1/2 cup of bleach can be substituted.)

Smelly Water — A possible cause of the smell in the water is the anode rode in your water heater. It could be reacting to the bacteria and creating the hydrogen sulfide gas. We suggest using hydrogen peroxide to disinfect the water and replacing the rod with an aluminum one.
